Jara Chikitsa – The Ayurvedic Science of Healthy Ageing
Ageing is a natural and inevitable part of life. While modern approaches often focus on anti-ageing and reversing visible signs of growing older, Ayurveda offers a different perspective. The goal is not to stop ageing, but to age gracefully, maintaining physical vitality, mental clarity, emotional balance, and independence throughout life.
This branch of Ayurveda is known as Jara Chikitsa-the science of healthy ageing and longevity. It focuses on preserving the body’s strength, nourishing the tissues, supporting digestion, calming the mind, and enhancing resilience as we grow older.
The ultimate aim of Jara Chikitsa is to achieve Sukhayu and Dirghayu:
Sukhayu – A happy, healthy, and fulfilling life.
Dirghayu – A long life lived with vitality, purpose, and dignity.
According to Ayurveda, longevity is not measured simply by the number of years lived, but by the quality of those years. Strong digestion (Agni), nourishing daily routines, restorative sleep, balanced movement, and mental wellbeing form the foundation of healthy ageing.
By aligning our lifestyle with our unique constitution (Prakriti) and following time-tested Ayurvedic principles, we can support graceful ageing, preserve vitality, and continue to thrive at every stage of life.
